FULL-TIME: NEWCASTLE 2-1 SOUTHAMPTON.
90' +4
Carroll is virtually playing defence in the final few moments as Southampton pile forward frantically. It’s eventually poked out for a throw, which allows time for Saint-Maximin to receive treatment and sap precious time off the clock.
90' +2
Ward-Prowse hopes his latest corner can trouble the Newcastle defence, but Carroll is rooted to the penalty spot as he heads it away powerfully.
90'
The fourth official indicates five additional minutes for stoppages.
88'
C. Adams enters the game and replaces D. Ings.
Hasenhuttl makes a change immediately after the goal as Ings is replaced by Adams.
87'
F. Fernández has scored a goal for Newcastle United!
FERNANDEZ STEALS THE THREE POINTS AT THE DEATH! 2-1 NEWCASTLE! Unbelievable scenes as Sean Longstaff smashes a shot from outside the penalty area, which dips unexpectedly causing havoc for the goalkeeper. McCarthy goes down and can only push the ball to the edge of the six-yard box - where Fernandez meets it to tap it high into the roof of the open goal!
85'
S. Longstaff enters the game and replaces M. Almirón.
Almiron is withdrawn with five minutes remaining, as Sean Longstaff is given an opportunity.
83'
Bertrand looks to break down the left, but Manquillo shows just enough pace to nip in front and steal possession - which leads the Southampton full-back to drag his man down, giving away a free-kick.
79'
As we approach the final 10 minutes, it looks as though Southampton are showing a bit more desperation for the win as they come forward in numbers. As things stand, a draw would bring Southampton out of the relegation zone, though a win would carry them all the way up to a tie for 12th.
73'
S. Boufal enters the game and replaces M. Djenepo.
During the break in play, Boufal is brought in for Djenepo.

Description
71'
Dummett is down and the physio has immediately come on to take a look at the full-back, who looks to have received an elbow from Ings in the face following a corner. It certainly wasn’t malicious, but it’s a bit sloppy and it’s left the Newcastle defender with quite the bloody face.
68'
J. Shelvey has scored a goal for Newcastle United! Assist by A. Carroll.
SHELVEY MAKES IT A GOAL IN THREE-STRAIGHT GAMES! 1-1! Shelvey’s free-kick is taken to Carroll, who is not allowed to get a header to it at the far post by the close defending of Long. Carroll then takes the ball in his stride and heads to the touchline before recomposing and firing a cross back into the penalty area, where Shelvey meets it with a thundering header! The hosts are back level!
Carroll is given the assist for his cross, which led to Shelvey's header - usually a statement said in reverse.
67'
Cédric Soares gets yellow.
Cedrick is rightfully shown a yellow card for raising a boot very high in order to clear a bouncing ball, and catching Almiron in the face with it in the process. Newcastle have a free-kick on the left edge of the penalty area, with Shelvey standing over it.
62'
P. Højbjerg gets yellow.
In an attempt to break up play and slow the counter-attack, Hojbjerg mistimes a challenge and receives a yellow card for the challenge.
60'
Carroll immediately makes his presence felt, fouling Bertrand during an aerial duel just outside the Southampton penalty area.
59'
A. Carroll enters the game and replaces Joelinton.
Carroll is introduced for his 100th Newcastle appearance, as Bruce looks to turn the tides of the match. Joelinton is the man to make way with just over half an hour remaining.
58'
Saint-Maximin is again involved as he collects the ball on the left and drives at Cedric, cutting inside and opening his body up for a shot before driving an effort low towards McCarthy’s goal - which he deals with easily.
56'
Heroic goalkeeping as McCarthy comes quickly off his line and jumps over Shelvey to collect a dangerous Saint-Maximin cross. The goalkeeper bobbles it the first time, but he’s able to make amends and collect it on the ground at the second attempt.
52'
D. Ings has scored a goal for Southampton! Assist by J. Stephens.
INGS MAKES IT 1-0 SAINTS! FIVE IN A ROW FOR THE STRIKER! Stephens hoofs a long ball down the right flank, which Fernandez allows to bounce over his head in miscommunication, as the centre-back thought Dubravka would come out for it. Ings storms through and picks up the loose ball, holding off Fernandez who had come back into the frame before dispatching a low strike which bulges the back of the net!
It was a delightful long-range pass down the flank by Stephens - though not even he could have predicted how Ings would make the most of it. In any case, it goes down as an assist for the centre-back!
48'
J. Shelvey gets yellow.
Redmond bursts through the Newcastle midfield with the centre-backs in his sights, but Shelvey dives in to protect his defence, bringing the winger down. It’s a yellow card for the Magpies captain - two minutes into the second half.
46'
F. Schär enters the game and replaces C. Clark.
A change at half-time sees Schar replace Clark for Newcastle.
Newcastle get the match restarted from the kick-off!
45' +1
HALF-TIME: NEWCASTLE 0-0 SOUTHAMPTON.
45'
The fourth official indicates one additional minute of stoppages.
44'
J. Ward-Prowse gets yellow.
Ward-Prowse poorly mistimes a challenge on Almiron and sees the match's first yellow card.
43'
It’s put in by Bertrand, but nobody in a Southampton shirt attacks it with any kind of commitment, once again allowing Joelinton to whack it clear.
41'
Almiron steps through Bertrand on the wing, the full-back getting his body across to take the contact smartly. He’s won his side a free-kick late in the first half, which he’ll deliver himself.
39'
Djenepo has both Long and Ings in front of him as he heads towards the penalty area and opts for the latter as Dummett was pulled out of position. Just an easy throughball is required, but the Southampton winger slashes it - sending it out for a goal-kick almost immediately, much to Hasenhuttl’s frustration.
37'
Joelinton is forced to shield the ball from two Saints midfielders - just to get a pass back to Clark at centre-back. It’s been a tight and scrappy affair in the first half to say the least.
35'
Shelvey takes a short corner to Saint-Maximin, who looks to turn before cutting back to the byline. He plays the ball too far ahead of him, letting it overrun - which results in a Saints goal-kick.
33'
Neither side have looked likely to score after 30 minutes, with most of the play occurring in midfield. The weather has no doubt played a part but with both sides desperate for the points, results will be prioritised over performance.
31'
Redmond uses his pace to set the Newcastle defenders backwards, before shifting play to the left for Long. He looks to get a pass across the six-yard box, but a sliding Fernandez puts it out for a corner.
29'
Shelvey whips a corner into the 18 for Clark, but he mistimes his jump, sending his effort down into the ground before it bounces up nicely for McCarthy to take.
27'
Ward-Prowse nips in and wins possession from Hayden just outside the Newcastle penalty area, but Ings - looking to go through past Clark - runs into the back of Cedric, which allows Southampton to clear.
25'
Ward-Prowse whips a free-kick into the penalty area from an awkward, central position - but his ability still allows him to get enough bend to make it a dangerous delivery. Bednarek is up there, but it falls for Joelinton to scuff a clearance away.
23'
Saint-Maximin reaching from his bag of tricks as he receives a pass with his back to goal and keeps the ball up five or six times, inviting pressure from Southampton defenders. Three Saints players crowd the mercurial winger before he makes a move, though he’s unable to wriggle free from the pressure.
21'
Cedric leaps over Willems, who had stayed on the ground - throwing the Newcastle full-back to the ground. Shelvey hits the free-kick to the edge of the penalty area for Joelinton to flick-on, but it’s poor orchestration as Bednarek gets it away with his head.
18'
Following a throw-in on halfway, Willems attempts a dangerous square pass to the middle of the park, which is promptly cut-out by Redmond. The winger carries the ball into the penalty area, but Dubravka makes a great save to put it out for a corner.
16'
Ward-Prowse looks to slip a disguised ball through the middle of the Newcastle defence for Ings, but Dummett reads the intent perfectly as he intercepts.
14'
Southampton build around the Newcastle penalty area - but with 11 Magpies players in their own half, Ward-Prowse and Djenepo are finding it hard to be incisive.
8'
Ward-Prowse delivers with his usual accuracy to the edge of the six, but Ings can only turn his header off of a Newcastle defender for a corner.
7'
Shelvey is called for a foul on Djenepo on the right touchline, giving Southampton an opportunity to swing the ball into the penalty area from the free-kick.
5'
Redmond drives through the centre towards the penalty area, but Fernandez uses his positioning to jockey the pacey winger before Manquillo comes across and dispossesses him.
3'
It’s been a relatively sloppy start at St. James’ as neither side is able to hold onto the ball for an extended period of time in the driving rain. The hosts seem to have a bit more desire going forward, but that could be the result of Southampton’s desire to play out from the back.

Southampton get the match underway from the kick-off!
Hello and welcome to our LIVE Premier League fixture between Newcastle United and Southampton!
Three wins in their last five matches have a relatively unfancied Newcastle side in a three-way tie for ninth spot - level on points with Sheffield United - whom the Magpies beat in midweek - and Arsenal. St. James’ Park has been somewhat of a fortress for the hosts, as they have not lost on Tyneside since a 1-0 loss to the Gunners on the first matchweek of the season.
Today’s is a fixture of contrasting fortunes as Southampton travel to Newcastle, looking for their first away win in six matches. A crucial win at St. Mary’s on Wednesday gave the Saints two victories on the bounce for the first time this season - though it still hasn’t been enough to get them out of the relegation zone - as they sit 18th. With Aston Villa and West Ham perilously close to the drop as well, a win (or draw) could see Hasenhuttl’s men climb out of the bottom three.
With 15 minutes to go before kick-off, let's take a look at the team news, starting with the hosts!
SOUTHAMPTON XI (4-4-2): Alex McCarthy; Cedric Soares, Jack Stephens, Jan Bednarek, Ryan Bertrand; Moussa Djenepo, James Ward-Prowse, Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg, Nathan Redmond; Shane Long, Danny Ings.
NEWCASTLE SUBS: Karl Darlow, Andy Carroll, Dwight Gayle, Emil Krafth, Sean Longstaff, Fabian Schar, Christian Atsu.
NEWCASTLE XI (5-4-1) Martin Dubravka; Jetro Willems, Paul Dummett, Ciaran Clark, Federico Fernandez, Javier Manquillo; Allan Saint-Maximin, Jonjo Shelvey, Isaac Hayden, Miguel Almiron; Joelinton.
SOUTHAMPTON SUBS: Angus Gunn, Michael Obafemi, Jannik Vestergaard, Oriol Romeu, Maya Yoshida, Sofiane Boufal, Che Adams.
It will be interesting to see if either manager looks to settle for a draw as the match nears its conclusion, with a point potentially mutually beneficial. Neither bench has a game-changing talent in attack, though the strength of Carroll or the skill of Boufal could be useful for Newcastle and Southampton respectively, should the managers look to change the dynamic of the fixture in search of three points. No doubt increased emphasis will be put on free-kicks and corners as a simple and effective way - especially considering the takers - of finding the breakthrough.
That concludes our commentary of the Premier League fixture between Newcastle and Southampton! We hope you enjoyed it!
Newcastle are in action again next Saturday, when they travel to face Burnley. Southampton are featuring on the same day when they host West Ham.
